BIOGRAPHY: Sketch provided by Arthur Gibbony:
BIOGRAPHY: Christian Winebrenner, 3rd child of Johann Christian and Christiana Wyand Winebrenner, was born about 1764 in York County, Pennsylvania (Birth record not found, though record of his brothers and sisters was found there). He died 20 December 1832 aged about 68 years, at his farm home near Martinsburg in Morrison’s Cove, Blair County, Pennsylvania (then Bedford), and likely buried there, but headstone and record not found. Date of his birth calculated from that of near brothers and sister, and date of birth of his first child. Date of his death learned from letter of 8 January 1833 by his nephew Rev. John Winebrenner to John’s father, Philip saying Christian had died 20 December 1832 “at his home in Morrison’s Cove Blair County, Pennsylvania”.
BIOGRAPHY: About 1780, when he was a young man, he likely moved with his father and family from York County, Pennsylvania to Hagerstown, Maryland. It is not known just when he moved from Hagerstown to Blair County, Pennsylvania then Bedford County and settled near Martinsburg. He owned land there, and a deed on file at Bedford, Pennsylvania shows that on 3 June 1809, he conveyed, for 5 shillings, “ground situated some little distance from Christian erecting an house of Public Worship, etc.”. It was deeded to Wardens of a Church “Commonly called The Congregation at Christian Winebrenners”. It says this was part of “Land Warranted to John Adams (his father-in-law) in 1802 by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania” and had been bequeathed by him to his daughter Mary, wife of Christian Winebrenner. Further, the Archives of Pennsylvania Series 3, Volume 25, page 667, shows Warrantees of land in County of Bedford, that Christian Winebrenner owned 174 acres, date of survey being 24 August 1826. His will is on file at Bedford, and the writer has a copy of it.
BIOGRAPHY: He married Mary Adams, probably in Bedford County about 1788, date of her birth not know. She is the daughter of John Adams, Bedford County who had been a Revolutionary War soldier. Mary died, very likely late in 1809, probably near Martinsburg and probably buried near there, though headstone and record not found. Their children, seven of record; legend says ten.
BIOGRAPHY: Christian Winebrenner married second, about 1809 in Bedford County, Pennsylvania Abigail Chrisman, born in 1788 in Germany, and came to America when 16 years of age, thus about 1804. She died 16 August 1864 aged 76 years, in Noble County, Indiana and buried in Sanford cemetery near Merriam, Noble County. She may have moved to Indiana in August 1846 when a number of her children did, her husband having died in 1832.
BIOGRAPHY: Extracts from the Will of Christian Winebrenner Senior of Woodbury Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania dated 16 November 1829, probated 29 January 1833. Signed by his mark, gave to “my four eldest sons, Christian, Jacob, Peter and David, and to my 3 eldest daughters, $1.00 each” (these were children of his first marriage, and are all that we have definite trace of). He gave to his wife Abby (Abigail Chrisman) all of estate during her life if a widow. She to raise and school “my 8 youngest children”. After death of Abby, estate to be sold and money divided equally to John, Andrew, Daniel, Joseph, Elizabeth, Sarah, William and Polly (Peggy).
Information from Arthur Gibbony. Born in Germany and moved to the States at sixteen, about 1804. She may have moved to Indiana in August 1846, when a number of her children did, her husband having died in 1832. Ten children. Abigail went blind before1860, and was living with her daughter Sarah.
