BIOGRAPHY: Family History of Earl and Cora Ellen Stevens Winebrenner, as recalled by their children, Ronald H. and Dorothy Jean Winebrenner Boyer.
Earl grew up in and around North Manchester, Indiana. He was the 7th of 11 children. He was the son of Charles Sylvester Winebrenner and Emma Margaret Cullers. He finished the 6th grade. As a youth, while riding a horse, a nearby horse kicked his right leg on his shin. It left a scar that remained all his life. As a prank, he and friends had dismantled a neighbor's buggy and reassembled it on top of their barn.
Cora grew up near Mecca, Indiana. She was the 1st of 9 children. She was the daughter of George Edward Alvin Stevens and Reuzzilla Mendenhall. She finished the 8th grade in school.
Earl married Mary Edith Churchill Stumpff on Nov 27, 1918. She died on Jan 29, 1923. No children.
Cora married John Roy Jones on Sep 16, 1916. They had three children: Kathryn Irene, B.Oct 8, 1917, D.Nov 13, 1917. John Roy Jr, B.Jan 23, 1919. James Robert, B.Mar 1, 1921, D.Mar 2, 1921. The children were all born in Mecca, Indiana. Cora's husband, John Roy Jones, died: 12 Jan 1921.
Cora and Earl met in South Bend, Indiana, during the early 1920's through mutual friends, Peg and Elza Richter. Earl was dating Elza's sister, Sylvia, at the time. Cora and Earl married on 17 Oct 1923, in Mishawaka, Indiana.
1 July 1924, Robert Earl was born.
1925, they lived on Lawrence St, 2 blocks east of Logan in Mishawaka, Indiana. Earl worked at a 2nd-hand store during the 1920s. During the 1920s, Cora worked for Ball Band factory, Mishawaka, Indiana. They made rubber products, shoes, boots, etc. They also made products for the military. 17 Oct 1925, Ronald Homer was born.
1927, they lived on Somerset St. 3 May 1927, Dorothy Jean was born.
1927-32, they lived at 1734 Huey St, South Bend, Indiana.
This house had a dirt floor in the basement. Earl drove a pipe 30 feet into the ground and hit water. So he put in a pump to use the water for laundry. During this time an old man with a beard had walked into their front yard. The children ran inside and excitedly told their mother. She looked outside to see her grandfather, John Mendenhall. He had walked from Mecca to South bend. He said it took about two weeks. He was around 70 years old at the time. While living at this residence, their son, Robert, fell out of a tree, playing Tarzan, and broke his wrist. Also, for two years of this time Robert was placed in Healthwin Sanitarium to treat asthma/tuberculosis. He was five years old.
1932-34, they lived on Mayflower Rd, near the airport.
During this time, Robert and Jeanie had been able to get a ride in Homer Stockert's open cockpit biplane. He "buzzed" their house. Cora was very upset about this. Earl delivered milk for Matthew's Dairy in the early 1930s.
Earl developed stomach problems during this time and began eating oatmeal for breakfast. He ate this for breakfast the rest of his life. During the great depression, 1934 he owned a dump truck and worked for the Works Progress Administration (WPA). He often brought home several bushels of produce in his truck during this time so that Cora could can and store it.
1934, moved to 1334 Lincoln Way East, South Bend, Indiana, neighboring a florist/greenhouse. 12 April 1936, Richard Earl was born. The house burned, 2nd floor and roof, in April, 1937.
1937, moved to 507 S. 36th St, near the railroad tracks, South Bend, Indiana. Later bought the empty lot just south of them, to use for a large garden. Cora had always been a member of the Mormon church, but during this year Earl joined also. After church meetings on Sunday she would always wait to see that the missionaries had a place to eat dinner. If not, she would invite them over. Most Sundays, the family made ice cream after church.
1943, bought 80 acres off of U.S.20, at the intersection of Darden and Auten Roads.
During World War II, Cora worked for Bendix Aircraft Co, South Bend, Indiana, making parts for aircraft.
1949, bought a store/gas station on U.S.20, west of South Bend.
1951-52, they divorced. Earl moved back to the farm at this time. They remarried in 1953-54. During the 1950s she cleaned offices at Notre Dame University, South Bend, Indiana. He later worked for Keeshin Motor Express, driving local-delivery semi trucks. Keeshin Motors paid its employees in silver dollars one time on their 25th anniversary.
1954, bought a house at 720 Diamond Ave, South Bend, Indiana. He worked as a truck dispatcher for Goodwill Industries until 1965. 1957, she became a cook and baker. 1959-60, she baked for Dobbs House at the South Bend airport. They lived at this address until their 2nd divorce in 1965. Then Earl moved out west to Utah.
1965, Cora moved to 1116 S. 34th St, South Bend, Indiana. Prior to her moving in, this house was known as 3401 Pleasant St. She had the address changed because the house actually faced 34th St. She cooked for Morningside Hotel, South Bend, as well as the hospital in Berrien Springs, Michigan, during the 1960s.
In 1973, Cora moved to the Royal Arms apts, Salt Lake City, Utah.
1980, Cora moved in with her son, Ronald, and family, for 6 months, in Belvidere, Illinois. She then moved into Olsen Plaza, high rise apartments, in Rockford, Illinois, until Feb 1983.
Cora then moved back in with Ron and Norma until she died on 1 August 1983. She was buried in Highland Cemetery, South Bend, Indiana.
